Printing packings and labels is quite a specialization - even in such a way that people talk about the "packaging industry" and that we run up to a regularly organized trade fair with the meaningful name "Labelexpo". Next to a lot of technical know-how for packaging and/or label printing, almost every packing or label in the world contains multiple languages. Ending up with a well translated version of the original language on a package or label is time-consuming and hard to manage because it often involves lots of people, spread over various places. Our web2print tool has been improved to meet the specific demands of packaging and label printers in order to speed up and manage their translation workflow.

TransVit is our online translation management software for the production of multilingual print materials. By allowing graphic designers, translators and marketers to work interactively on a print order, the translation workflow is speed up a lot.

Translators translate in a web interface - even if the graphic designer is still finalizing the document lay-out. What's more, the translator continues to work in his familiar and trusted way. Professional translators are used to work via a translation engine like Trados. Due to the standard Trados integration in TransVit, translators can still make use of their beloved translation tool while working in TransVit. Once the translators have finished their job, marketers come into play. They can revise the translations and consequently approve or reject translations.

This piece of software has already proven its effectiveness within commercial printing workflows. However, TransVit has been extended in such a way that it can handle the needs of the packaging and label market as well.

What particular web2print needs does the packaging and label printing industry have?

Having a closer look at the web2print needs for packaging and label printing companies, we noticed that the source files (e.g. Adobe InDesign) are lay-outed differently then "commercial printing" documents. To be able to handle those file types in a web2print solution for online translation management, those technical themes become quite important. However, dealing with those graphical peculiarities would take us far beyond the scope of this article.

Next to the graphical peculiarities, packing and label printers require the usage of their own internal "translation dictionaries". This means that TransVit requires connection with other databases then Trados. In the improved TransVit version, connecting with translation dictionaries or e.g. technical dictionaries can be executed easily. As a result, the translations are done much more efficiently, in less time and with less efforts.
